About
The present research aims to analyse the life stories, trajectories of vulnerability and exclusion of older people whose identities do not correspond to the sex assigned at birth (i.e., trans people), as well as their perspectives on aging, and the institutional and public policy responses directed at this community. This project will be developed through different studies, using Participatory Action Research methodologies [31] and a plurality of data collection methods.
In this regard, in the first phase (Study 1), interviews will be conducted using a semi-structured interview guide with individuals who self-identify as older trans people in Portugal and Brazil. Subsequently, a questionnaire will be administered to professionals working in the fields of aging and gender and sexualities (e.g., LGBT associations, social centres, retirees’ associations, senior universities, political parties, etc.) in Portugal and Brazil, focusing on their attitudes and knowledge regarding institutional responses for older trans people (Study 2). Finally, in a third phase (Study 3), focus groups will be conducted (with older trans people, retirees’ associations, representatives of political parties, managers of day-care centers and residential facilities for older adults) to discuss their positions on institutional responses and public policies for older trans people.
Data from Studies 1 and 3 will be systematised through thematic analysis [1]. Based on a commitment to participation [35] and social transformation, this project aims to contribute to deepening critical reflection on the life histories of older trans people and the processes of exclusion to which they are subjected, while also examining institutional responses for this population. It seeks to problematize the main needs and specificities of this social group with a view to developing public policies and educational and social positions that promote gender diversity, inclusion, and social justice.
