About
Mental Health Literacy is a fundamental dimension of promoting psychological well-being, mental health, and facilitating access to appropriate support and care. In educational settings, its importance is particularly significant, as educators and teachers are in a privileged position to recognise early signs of psychological distress, foster emotionally safe school environments, and refer children and adolescents to specialised services when necessary.
However, existing evidence suggests that the levels of Mental Health Literacy among these professionals are often insufficient or uneven across different domains. This project aims to generate evidence on the levels of Mental Health Literacy among a sample of preschool educators and primary school teachers (Years 1–6) in Portugal and to evaluate the effectiveness of a pilot training programme designed to enhance it.
The study comprises a diagnostic component focused on the initial assessment of participants’ Mental Health Literacy, as well as an intervention component based on the implementation of a training programme and the evaluation of its impact through a pre-test/post-test design.
The findings are expected to provide evidence to inform both initial teacher education and continuing professional development strategies, strengthen the capacity of education professionals, and promote the psychological well-being of educational communities.
