Between 27 and 29 January 2026, the Learning, Teaching and Training Activity (LTTA) of the project “CARES-Deaf – Communication Access for Quality Mental Health” will take place, bringing together partners from Necmettin Erbakan University (Turkey), the University of Geneva (Switzerland), Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (Spain), and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto.
The LTTA, entitled “Interpreting in Mental Health Settings: Strategies for the Inclusion of Deaf People”, will involve the participation of 25 Deaf and hearing professionals, with five professionals from each partner country. This initiative aims to foster a space for collaborative learning and the exchange of good practices, focusing on improving access to mental health services for the Deaf community.
Over the three days, training activities will be developed with the objective of:
- enhancing understanding of the foundations of mental health within the Deaf community;
- identifying the main barriers to accessing health services;
- applying ethical principles and self-care strategies in therapeutic contexts;
- and promoting the linguistic adaptation of mental health terminology and discourse into Sign Language.
This international training activity reinforces the CARES-Deaf project’s commitment to promoting more accessible, inclusive, and culturally competent mental health services for Deaf people.
