Portuguese Sign Language Translation and Interpreting Laboratory | ESE P.PORTO

Portuguese Sign Language Translation and Interpreting Laboratory | ESE P.PORTO

Objectives

The Portuguese Sign Language Translation and Interpreting laboratory was set up with the aim of providing a workspace for effective preparation of students in the practice of Portuguese Sign Language. The laboratory is equipped with a system of booths, hardware and software that allows interpreters to work in a booth, listening through headphones to the speaker's speech, delivered in the room via a microphone or audio, or simultaneously viewing the audiovisual recording or the speech delivered by the speaker in LGP on their PC. Almost simultaneously, they return the message either in voice or in LGP.

Description of the space

This space has six soundproofed booths equipped with software and hardware suitable for translating and interpreting LGP: six computers (with internet connection), a space for viewing and making videos (in LGP), listening (to voice) and recording cameras. It also has a desk for the teacher/researcher, equipped with a camera with two monitors and a device that monitors all the work done inside the booths by the interpreters, also making it possible to discuss the work done in class on a network, either orally or by sign.

It should be noted that, in addition to the booths and all the computer equipment attached to them, the Translation and Interpreting room in LGP includes the functionality of filming, with a monochrome green background that allows this room/laboratory to also be a training and service space linked to LGP/translation, interpreting and guide-interpreting.
