The IV Biennial Congress of the Lusophone International Network - EstreiaDiálogos, to be held at the Polytechnic of Porto - School of Education (Porto, Portugal), on 2, 3 and 4 November 2023, under the theme Action research, identity and professional emancipation, aims to provide a space for debate on the role of action research, in various socio-professional contexts, in the development of social practices that promote professional and identity emancipation, social and cognitive justice, through intercultural dialogue and other forms of promoting full citizenship in democratic societies. It aims to encourage the sharing of knowledge in the field of action-research, based on interdisciplinary approaches, debating the conceptual, epistemological and ethical challenges that action-research can help respond to, present in the diverse socio-cultural realities of Portuguese-speaking countries.
At a time when different conceptions of professionalism coexist, often associated with movements that seek to give a technical-bureaucratic slant to the human professions, placing them at the service of mercantilist agendas, collaborative action-research can help to rescue a concept and practice of professionalism that associates it with movements to build professional identities that serve the transformation of contexts and give them an emancipatory character and meaning. We believe in the possibilities of action research to promote the rehabilitation of human beings and their potential for fulfilment, with the right to their professional identity and their emancipation as subjects (producers) of knowledge. However, there are many obstacles and challenges facing professionals, as well as deep contradictions, which need to be brought into a space of shared reflection by communities of researchers and professionals from the Humanities and Social Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences and Human Geography.
